TASBooks - How to install or upgrade your software

Thank you for choosing TASBooks. This article guides you through the installation process. Once you've installed the software, for more help getting started, you can find more useful information on our website.

General preparation

Before you install TASBooks, you must:

  • Check that your systems meet the minimum requirements for TASBooks.
  • Check your computer's Regional and Language Options in the Control Panel. The country you specify in Regional and Language options determines your base currency, VAT schemes, VAT rates and settlement discount schemes. Before you install your new software, you must check that this is correct.
  • Close all software - Before you install TASBooks, we recommend that you save any unsaved work and close any open software. You must close all Sage software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Log on to your computer as a user with full administrative rights.
  • If you're upgrading from a previous version, ensure you have a backup of your data.
  • Confirm your license type and activation information.
  • For workgroup or network installations, confirm the following:

    • Will the data be stored on a server or the primary PC?
    • Note: For speed purposes, we recommend that you set up the server as the primary PC.  The primary PC creates the central licence file for the other computers To ensure the licence is current, you should use it at least once every 90 days.

    • The data folder is shared with full read/write permissions to everyone who will use TASBooks.
    • Wherever the data is stored you should also install the Pervasive Database Engine.  This installs with TASBooks so an additional installation is only required if the data is stored on a server without an installation of TASBooks. You must install it as a service.

To install Pervasive Database Engine

If you have a workgroup or network installation where the server only holds the data and not an installation of TASBooks, you should follow the steps in this section to install the Pervasive Database Engine. This must be done before you continue to install on the primary and additional computers

  1. First, confirm that you have the correct installation for your type of license.
  2. Note: The independent Pervasive installation files are included on your TAS installation CD. The download link for TASBooks does not include the network versions of Pervasive. If you don't have a CD and need one of the following downloads please contact TAS Support.

  2. If the tests pass > Close. If the tests fail, you must check that you have full read/write permissions to the data folder. For further assistance please contact TAS Support.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate your product.  If the product activation is successful > Close. If an activation key is required > enter the activation key from your invoice, or contact TAS Support for your activation details.
  4. Note: If you are installing an additional computer to a workgroup or network, the license information is picked up from the data directory and a confirmation of the licence information appears.

  5. If required, when prompted, read our Getting Started Guides. Alternatively, you can access these later from TASBooks Company Manager > Help > Getting Started Guide.
  6. If required, follow the on-screen prompts to create your company.  The following options are available, and you'll find help on this in our Getting Started Guide:

    • Create a new company from scratch - Use this option to manually enter your company information.
    • Create a new company from a backup file - Use this option to create your company from a backup, for example, one your accountant has given to you.
    • Transfer a company from an existing TAS program - Use this option if you’re upgrading from different TAS software using a backup of your data.

Note: If you're restoring a backup from an earlier version of TASBooks, when you open the company for the first time you are prompted to convert the data.

To upgrade TASBooks

Note: To install your version update, you must first re-licence the software for the new version. If you have a workgroup or network version of TASBooks, you must follow these steps on your primary client computer. If you aren’t sure which this is, you can check from TASBooks Company Manager > Tools > Network Configuration.

To re-license the software

  1. TASBooks Company Manager > File > Product Activation.
  2. Check the serial number and company name are correct > Next.
  3. Activate Now > Next. TASBooks retrieves your licence information direct from TAS and your details appear. Continue to step 5.
  4. Note: If the company name or serial number don't match the information we have registered for your company, or this computer does not have an open Internet connection, your activation code can't be retrieved automatically.  You must then enter your activation code manually.

  5. Confirm that your serial number and company name are correct > enter your activation code. Alternatively, if your details aren't correct > Back > make the necessary changes. If you need to obtain a new code, please contact TAS Support.

  6. To update your activation details > Finish > Close.
To check for and install updates
  1. TASBooks Company Manager > Help > Check for Updates.
  2. Note: If no download appears, you can manually install the update. You can download the latest updates from our support sites at www.tassoftware.co.uk for UK customers or www.mysage.ie for customers in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). Alternatively, contact TAS Support on 0800 694 0220 for UK customers or 1890 946 881 for ROI customers.

  3. Download Now > close the TASBooks Company Manager > Install Now > Yes.
  4. Help > About > check your product version has updated.  The version number appears in the bottom left corner of the About window.
  5. Note: If you have a workgroup or a network license, after re-licensing on the primary PC, repeat the steps on each additional client computer.

Using a NAS drive

If you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive to hold your data, to ensure this works correctly you must adjust the login information for Pervasive on the primary PC.

  1. Start > right-click Computer > Manage.
  2. Services and Applications > Services > Pervasive.
  3. General > set the start-up type to Automatic > Apply.
  4. Log On tab > This account > and enter the administrator user name and password > Apply.
  5. Note: The login for the NAS drive and the login for the primary PC must be the same.

  6. General > Stop > Start > OK.
  7. Open TASBooks > set up TASBooks to point to the new data location..

Moving to a new server

To set up the new server

Tip: If possible, to make it easier to reconfigure the additional computers, do not disconnect the old server until TASBooks is set up on the new server.

  1. Create your new folder and share it with full read/write permissions. We recommend that you create this folder on the C drive of the server.
  2. If you're copy over the data folder, remove the NWCONFIG.LOC and TSB.CLF files.  The NWCONFIG.LOC file points to the data directory and the TSB.CLF is the central license file for TASBooks.  When you re-license on the primary PC, the files are recreated.
  3. Install the software using the required installation file:

    • If previous server was the primary - Install TASBooks as a workgroup or a network primary and activate.
    • If previous server only held data - Install Pervasive Database Engine.

For a workgroup installation of Pervasive, install as a service. Network installations automatically install as a service.

For network installations, to activate the permanent Pervasive key on the new server, you must first deactivate it from the old server. The best option is to finish the reconfiguration of the primary client and additional clients to the new server before you activate Pervasive with the permanent key.

Note: You must install the correct version of Pervasive for your purchased TASBooks license.

    Workgroup SetupWorkgroup_x86.exe
    Network - 32-bit SetupServer_x86.exe
    Network - 64-bit SetupServer_x64.exe

The downloads are available from your TASBooks CD. Alternatively, you can download the latest updates from our support sites at www.tassoftware.co.uk for UK customers or www.mysage.ie for customers in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). Alternatively, contact TAS Support on 0800 694 0220 for UK customers or 1890 946 881 for ROI customers.

To reconfigure additional or client computers

  1. Company Manager > Tools > Network Configuration.
  2. Data folder > Change > browse to the new data location > select the folder that holds the company information > OK > Next.
  3. Once the checks complete > Finish.
  4. If required, to create new NWCONFIG.LOC and TSB.CLF files, re-activate the software.
  5. Note: If you disconnected the previous server before configuring the new one, to relicense the software remove the local license file TSB.LLF from each computer then start TASBooks.  The TSB.LLF file holds the path to find the central licence file TSB.CLF and points to the old server.  You can find the TSB.LLF in C:\ProgramData\TAS\TASBooks, or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ Appdata\ TAS\TASBooks for Windows XP.
